Beware of Dumpster Fluff (No, Not Our Blog)

calendar Posted on March 24th, 2010 10:05:59 AM

"Fluff," although having a name that induces less fear than say.. watching a kitten yawn, can be a dangerous material. Hazardous waste, when sent to the wrong place, can have terrible effects on the environment and people alike

The term "fluff" is a name used for the leftovers of the automobile scraps that are put through shredding machines. These leftovers contain bits of glass, fiber, rubber, engine fluids, dirt and plastics.

The great concern about recycling fluff, especially in the Los Angeles, CA area is the habit of sending it to city landfills. The dumping of fluff,  according to the shredding companies, is not detrimental to health or safety.

The Toxic Waste department had other notions, stating that, "We're seeing increased amounts of lead, zinc and cadmium in the waste stream, so we think it's no longer appropriate to allow [these companies] to operate."

There are regulations for many dumpsters in Los Angeles, but many of the shredding companies find a way around. We could be in for a long struggle on this topic and unfortunately Beach Cans customers in LA could be the ones to suffer.

::Off Topic:: Famous Fluff Throughout History:

  1. Name of Tiger Wood's former caddy and maybe one of his girlfriends.
  2. Chemical make-up of the Ghostbuster's arch rival: The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
  3. Lesser known, slightly less magical dragon brother of Puff.
  4. The irritating material that accumulates in your belly button on a nearly daily basis.
